Meeting women online is a great way to practice a few techniques that will get you far in the long run. Online dating has the advantage of putting you in control of the situation, and avoiding the awkwardness of real-life rejection. But how do you get her to notice you? Your online profile is the key to success.

There are a lot of do’s and don’t’s when it comes to profile writing. If you take too many wrong turns you may end up wondering why you are not having any luck. The truth is, luck has nothing to do with it. Writing a successful online dating profile is an art, and it is not as hard as you think.

First off, there are a few deal-breakers you need to avoid at all costs when writing a profile. Whatever you do, do not announce what a nice guy you are. This is one of the most common mistakes newcomers to online dating sites make. Avoid writing a resume-style description of your life, your job, or yourself. And please, please, whatever you do, resist the urge to post that picture of you doing a keg-stand with the guys, no matter how funny you think it is.

If these are examples of how to do it wrong, then how do you get it right? Let’s use some of David Deangelo’s priceless advice. For starters, use “cocky & funny” to get noticed. If you start out sounding like a suck-up, women will think you are needy and desperate. When in doubt, be funny.

In his book, “Double Your Dating,” David Deangelo refers to a type of humor he calls “cocky-funny”. This technique works online and in real life. Try it and see. You need to make a girl feel like you are something special by keeping her on her toes a bit. Maybe you say, “Hot stud seeking supermodel to feed me peeled grapes.” Knock them off balance by saying something unexpected and humorous.

Maybe the most important piece of advice is this next bit. Leave out as many details as possible. I know, it sounds crazy, but believe me, it works. This is called “being mysterious”, and it means making her do some guess work. This gets her imagination going, and makes her want to know more.

And finally, get her attention with a knockout photo. Your photo might reflect your interests, highlight your best features, or just demonstrate a talent, but it needs to fulfill a few criteria. It should be fairly accurate and well-lit. You want her to see the real you, in your best form.

When creating your profile, just adhere to the basics covered here. You can’t go wrong with a dash of humor, some mystery, and a stand-out photo. There is much more to online dating, but if you follow this advice you will get your foot in the door every time.
